  1. Hi Emma!
This weeks topic of mental health has definitely made an impact on so many lives. Eating disorders is such a common thing that is around people everyday. It is interesting how you picked this topic because you discussed how it is relevant in the gymnastics world between gymnasts and coaches. I can agree with this because I used to be a gymnastics coach for elementary students. Some children would be super skinny and light as a feather. For others, I would need an assistant coach to help me teach the skill being taught that class. I have learned that this disorder can stem from anxiety and depression. It is sad to think that such young children may be suffering with these horrible disorders at such a small age. Even being aware of this at a young age may cause stress to what one is eating, eating enough or too much. Performance in the gymnastics world is the key concept of achieving skills. Looking appropriate in leotards is also a big aspect and if coaches see that one of their students are a little chunky, they make talk to their parents about weight control. This may lead to the child growing up with a eating disorder. Your presentation was greatly detailed and I enjoyed reading it! As future educators, I agree that it is essential to recognize eating disorders within our own students. Making sure parents are aware of such habits will make a difference in the students' life, and their parents' too. I enjoyed reading your blog post this week about mental health and eating disorders and I appreciate you sharing your story of eating disorders in the gymnastics scene. I am happy that we connected over that aspect! Your future is bright and you will be a great teacher.

  2. Hey Emma, chose your slide specifically because I have a close friend of mine that has bulimia. To this day he still has his struggles with the disorder and has trouble finding the right treatment and doctors. However, he shares his story in hopes to help others and find better help himself. I also love how organized and informative your slide is especially because eating disorders are not so easily understood it’s ideal to include as much information and additional sources to help others learn and even help others. It’s unfortunate that eating disorders were constantly around you and how in a way they encouraged it so you could fit into certain outfits or portray it because that’s how it’s “suppose” to look. It was very good to know how it affects children as well as their future and ways to prevent it and recognize it. Especially in today's generation children are experiencing things that we didn’t in our time. The things we didn’t think much about is thought about so much now and at young ages kids go through mental crisis and changes that put them through a lot. I enjoyed the additional sources and videos and can’t wait to share this with my close friend and others.

  3. Hey Emma,
Thank you for sharing. It really means a lot. As I grow up I realize how common eating disorders are. I have a friend who used to get made fun of because of his weight and he would starve himself and he would suffer. I tried talking to him multiple times, but he wouldn't listen. He developed an eating disorder and it really affected his health. This is all because was bullied for his weight, which is also another critical issue we talk about. I believe that it is very important as a teacher to make the student as comfortable as they can be. You can't make any jokes about people’s weight even though you are kidding and you have to treat every student with respect. As an athlete, I know how hard it could be. As a three sport athlete, I had to make sure I was in the best shape of my life. I was a wrestler and sometimes, I would have to starve myself just to make weight. I couldn't focus in one class. I had no energy. It is very crucial that we talk about mental health and eating disorders and try to break the stigma, especially with athletes.
